On 5 March 2026, a lively discussion about the future of AI programming unfolded in a Feishu group called the “Cursor User Communication Group.” It involved sharp questions about AI code quality, breaks in human cognition, and training-data contamination. As the debate reached its height, an antique-looking calligraphic work quietly appeared in the chat window.

Xuan-paper ground, semi-cursive script, and vertical couplets: at first glance, it looked like traditional Chinese calligraphy. But on reading every character closely, one finds that this four-character horizontal inscription and its two lines simultaneously encode Chinese classical philosophy, Buddhist thought on the Age of Dharma Decline, modern AI cognitive science, and—when the inscription is quickly pronounced—the name of the architecture that changed artificial intelligence: Transformer.

II. The couplet in full

传 思 法 末

Right line: 联结为器，筑就智脑玄枢
Left line: 运化生思，蕴成符号灵念

The couplet uses the traditional vertical format: the right line begins, the left line concludes, and the horizontal inscription sits above. Its structure is balanced and its tonal pattern harmonious. Yet its true ingenuity goes far beyond literary form.

III. Reading the inscription forward: 传思法末

From left to right—chuán sī fǎ mò—the inscription can be divided into two phrases: transmitting thought and the end of a method.

Its integrated meaning is: the traditional method by which thought is transmitted is approaching its end.

This reading strikes at a troubling reality in the current wave of AI programming. Someone in the group quoted the following observation:

“That developmental pipeline—writing bad code, being reviewed, building intuition through failure—is being bypassed completely. What happens when that pipeline finally runs dry? Almost nobody is discussing it.”

For thousands of years, human skills have passed along a clear path: apprentice error $\rightarrow$ master correction $\rightarrow$ intuition built through failure $\rightarrow$ eventual mastery of the inner method. Whether a blacksmith forging iron, a physician diagnosing through observation and inquiry, or a programmer writing a first segmentation fault, this pipeline of “pain–insight” has been the foundation of accumulated human cognitive ability.

AI now bypasses that pipeline. A new generation of developers can ask AI to generate code directly, skipping the full process of “error–understanding–growth.” The method of transmitting thought is indeed approaching its end.

IV. Reading the inscription in reverse: 末法思传

From right to left—the traditional direction for reading the horizontal inscription of a couplet—it becomes mò fǎ sī chuán: the Age of Dharma Decline and the transmission of thought.

Its integrated meaning is: in an age when the old method declines, thought is transmitted anew through a new medium.

The Buddhist “Age of Dharma Decline” is an evocative idea. It does not mean that Buddhist teaching has vanished completely. It names a subtler state:

• Teaching without practice: doctrine remains while those who truly practise disappear.
• Practice without realization: people study and practise, yet cannot truly realize truth.

Applied to contemporary software engineering, the correspondence is striking:

• Code without understanding: AI can generate correctly running code while nobody understands its underlying principle.
• Tools without intuition: developers possess powerful AI assistants but lose the engineering intuition built through error.

Someone in the group reported a sobering case: AI-generated image-processing code ran entirely normally but made a basic error about the underlying NV12/NV21 colour formats. More alarmingly,

the AI could not detect the fault in review until a human engineer with domain knowledge pointed it out; only then did the AI “suddenly understand.”

This is a contemporary picture of mofa: the form of code remains, but the Dao is lost.

Yet the words “transmission of thought” also bring a turn. Exactly as the old method declines, a new method of inheritance is arising. AI is not an end but a transformation—thought has found silicon as a new bearer, just as the Dharma is transmitted in different forms across different ages.

V. The hidden Easter egg: Transformer

If the first two readings display literary craft and philosophical depth, the third reveals an especially elegant conceit. Pronounce the four characters quickly:

Transformer—the neural-network architecture introduced by Google’s team in the 2017 paper Attention Is All You Need—changed natural-language processing and artificial intelligence as a whole. GPT, BERT, LLaMA, Gemini, and other leading language models all use Transformer as their underlying engine.

The author hides the world-changing name inside four Chinese characters in a classical calligraphic inscription. The Chinese meanings of the characters, whether read forward or backward, precisely point to the era-changing transformation Transformer has set in motion. Form and content, classical and modern, Chinese and English achieve unity in four characters.

VI. The right line: “Connection as vessel, building the mysterious pivot of the intelligent mind”

“Connection as vessel”—from neurons to neural networks

The word “connection” is among the couplet’s finest choices. It carries three levels of meaning.

First level: connectionism. Connectionism is one of AI’s three major schools, alongside symbolism and behaviourism. Its core idea is that intelligence arises from patterns of connection among many simple units, rather than from rules written in advance.

This line of thought can be traced from the artificial-neuron model proposed by McCulloch and Pitts in 1943, through Rosenblatt’s perceptron in 1958 and Rumelhart’s backpropagation algorithm in 1986, to its full flowering in the deep-learning revolution of 2012.

Second level: neural connection—joining neurons together. “Connection” is not only a technical term; it directly describes the operation of neural networks. In the biological brain, roughly 86 billion neurons are connected through around 100 trillion synapses, forming the material foundation of human consciousness. Every thought, inspiration, and decision arises from the flow and convergence of electrical signals through those connections.

Artificial neural networks model this mechanism. Transformer’s self-attention carries connection to an extreme: it permits every position in a sequence to connect directly with every other, breaking the sequential bottleneck of RNNs and realizing a genuine “interconnection of all things.”

Third level: taking connection as “vessel.” In Chinese philosophy, qi—vessel or implement—has a special meaning. The Book of Changes says: “What is above form is called Dao; what is below form is called vessel.” A vessel is the material form that carries the Dao. “Connection as vessel” means that the connecting structure of a neural network is the material carrier of intelligence: an implement, tool, and infrastructure, not intelligence itself.

The distinction is decisive: connection, or network structure, is the vessel; the intelligence emerging from it is the Dao.

“Building the mysterious pivot of the intelligent mind” means that connections continually accumulate, combine, and evolve until they form the deep and subtle central pivot of artificial intelligence. The phrase “mysterious pivot” is especially apt: Transformer attention heads, layer normalization, residual connections, and other mechanisms interweave into a black box that even its designers cannot fully explain. Is that not an excellent annotation of the phrase?

VII. The left line: “Transformation in motion gives birth to thought; accumulation becomes symbolic living ideas”

“Transformation in motion gives birth to thought”—from computation to emergence

Yunhua, “transformation in motion,” is an elegant double meaning. In traditional Chinese medicine it denotes the spleen and stomach’s function of digesting and transforming food. Here it means computation, transformation, and processing of data by a neural network: forward propagation, backpropagation, gradient descent, and parameter update, with trillions of matrix operations proceeding day and night in GPU clusters.

The phrase “gives birth to thought” identifies AI’s central riddle: how does thought arise from computation?

When GPT-4 solves an Olympiad problem, when Gemini Deep Think proves a previously unpublished mathematical theorem, when Claude writes a long rigorous analysis, one has to ask: is this genuine thought, or a refined simulation of thought? “Transformation in motion gives birth to thought” does not settle the question. It states only that thought has, in fact, arisen from transformation in motion.

“Accumulation becomes symbolic living ideas”—a qualitative leap from subsymbolic to symbolic

“Accumulation becomes” means formation by accumulated storage, concentration, and crystallization. “Symbol” directly invokes symbolism, one of the three major schools of AI, which holds that intelligence essentially consists in regular operation on symbols and logical inference. “Living ideas” goes beyond the cold notion of symbols and grants them spirit and vitality.

The line touches a leading question in AI cognitive science: the unity of connectionism and symbolism.

For a long time AI had two opposing camps:

• Connectionism: intelligence arises from connections among many simple units, without explicit symbols (neural networks).
• Symbolism: intelligence arises from rule-governed symbolic operations (expert systems and logic programming).

Large language models blur that boundary. They are connectionist products at their base—neural networks—yet exhibit striking symbolic reasoning capacity in logic, mathematics, and code.

The couplet precisely describes this process:

It is a qualitative transformation from subsymbolic to symbolic, a leap from statistics to understanding.

VIII. The self-referential loop: an ending is a beginning

The couplet’s most astonishing structural feature is that the bidirectional inscription forms a perfect self-referential loop—the core idea the author offered in the group conversation.

传思法末 → the old way of transmitting thought reaches an end

Read forward, an old method reaches its end. Read in reverse, a new method arises from the end. Ending is beginning; decline is emergence. Is this not a perfect textual embodiment of “a self-referential loop generating symbolic thought”?

More deeply, the phenomenon named by the inscription—cycle, emergence, self-reference—is displayed by its palindromic structure. It does not merely speak about a self-referential loop; it is one. Content and form reach unity at a meta-level.

This recalls a theme Douglas Hofstadter repeatedly investigates in Gödel, Escher, Bach: when a system becomes complex enough to refer to itself, consciousness may emerge. The couplet is a miniature presentation of that thought.

IX. Unity of four layers of meaning

The four characters 传思法末 bear four layers of meaning at once, and all point to one core claim:

The four layers mutually confirm and echo one another, forming one broad narrative:

Transformer architecture is the core engine of this era’s transformation in the paradigm of thought transmission. It constructs the material basis of intelligence through connectionism; through innumerable operations it allows symbolic thinking to emerge; and, in an age when the old method nears its end, it opens a new path by which thought may be inherited.

X. Epilogue: echoes of an age

This couplet was born at a special moment. By early 2026, AI programming tools had entered every corner of everyday development. Cursor, Copilot, Windsurf, and similar tools made “everyone is a programmer” more than a slogan. At the same time, concerns about AI code quality, cognitive dependence, and training-data contamination became increasingly sharp.

The group conversation reflects a characteristic tension of the age. On one side there is amazement at AI’s ability to solve 6 of 10 unpublished problems in the FirstProof mathematics challenge. On the other is concern about AI-generated code that “looks right yet is essentially wrong.” Transformer gives machines unprecedented apparent power of thought, while human cognitive capacity risks being “sweetly eroded” by AI tools.

The couplet carries contemporary frontier reflection in a classical form. It is neither unconditional optimism nor powerless pessimism, but a dialectical gaze:

• “Connection as vessel, building the mysterious pivot of the intelligent mind”—acknowledging AI’s power.
• “Transformation in motion gives birth to thought; accumulation becomes symbolic living ideas”—marvelling at emergence.
• “Transmission of thought reaches the end / thought is transmitted in the degenerate age”—remaining alert to endings while welcoming new birth.

Perhaps this is the attitude our age most needs: on a technology train accelerating at speed, neither fearing the brake nor worshipping the steering wheel, but opening our eyes and seeing the road clearly.

As the inscription suggests, history’s wheel turns whichever direction one reads. The old means of transmitting thought may approach its end, but within the Age of Dharma Decline thought will find a new road of inheritance.
