The Nature of the Universe: A Medium-Free Computation Fractal Chaos System Based on Self-Reference Paradoxes

Abstract
This paper proposes a novel ontological model of the universe, arguing that the universe does not run on any physical medium, but is a "medium-free" fractal chaos system driven by a trinity of "Self-Reference (SR)", "Entity-Relation (ER)", and "Lazy Evaluation (LE)". Based on the deduction of the contrapositive, this paper demonstrates that "paradoxes" are not logical flaws, but the absolute essential elements for the existence and evolution of the universe. The article compares this with Wolfram's Computational Universe theory, points out the core status of "Self-Reference" in medium-free computation, and proposes ten core conjectures regarding nested universe models and the limits of machine code parsing (Jia Baolong's Ten Conjectures of the Universe). Our physical universe is merely one specific solution within this massive, purely logical fractal chaos system.
Declaration: This paper is a pure theoretical exploration based on Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems and first principles. As it touches the absolute bottom of logic, this theory cannot be directly falsified in the traditional physical sense. The author sincerely accepts and expects rigorous criticism and examination from the physics and computer science communities.
1. Introduction: Paradoxes and Me
When I was a child, I was deeply fascinated by the Barber Paradox, always trying to find a perfect solution. At that time, I brooded over the imperfections of the world and logical loopholes. Later, I encountered the Library Paradox and Russell's Paradox. My intuition strongly told me: these seemingly different intellectual games are actually talking about the exact same thing.
It wasn't until I studied logic deeply that a shocking concept struck me: according to the deduction of the contrapositive, if "having a world inevitably means having paradoxes", then its contrapositive is "without paradoxes, there is no world". For someone with an extreme obsession with a "perfect world" (which I later learned is philosophically called "Occam's Razor"), I used to think paradoxes were bugs in the system that needed fixing. But I eventually realized: paradoxes are not only not flaws, they are precisely the absolute elements that constitute this world.
Later, I read about Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems [1]. My intuition told me once again that this is the same thing as Russell's Paradox. Stripping away all the complex mathematical disguises, the essence of these things is singular—the Self-Reference Paradox. It turns out that Russell's Paradox, Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems, and even the origin of the entire universe, are all the same thing.
2. The Ontology of the Universe: Medium-Free Computation and the Trinity Drive
Based on a profound understanding of the self-reference paradox, I propose a core argument regarding the nature of the universe: The universe is a massive fractal chaos system, and the physical universe we currently observe is merely one "solution" within this system.
This fractal system does not run on any physical hardware (like silicon chips or qubits); it evolves purely logically through "Medium-Free Computation" [2]. This is exactly as Buddhism states, "Form is emptiness (色即是空)"; macroscopic matter (form) is essentially nothing but entangled topological connections in the logical void (emptiness).
Before exploring the specific operation of this fractal system, we must first make a "dimensionality reduction division" at the philosophical level to clarify the relationship between the "ultimate ontology" and the "generative mechanism" of the universe.
At the highest level of ultimate ontology, the universe is absolutely "monistic". The root of all things is solely the pure logical verb of "Self-Reference (SR)". It is the only heart and engine of the universe; besides it, there is nothing else.
However, if we only remain at the "monistic" level, although the theory achieves absolute philosophical purity, it cannot render the macroscopic physical world before our eyes. No matter how powerful an engine is, without gears and tracks, it can only idle in the void. Therefore, to discuss the generative mechanism of the universe evolving from a "logical singularity" to "all things", we have to introduce two other concepts: Entity-Relation (ER) and Lazy Evaluation (LE).
It must be emphasized that ER and LE are not pre-set rules imposed by external forces. They are the fractal trajectories and processing methods inevitably left in the void when "Self-Reference" attempts to resolve its own paradox. The monism (Self-Reference) is the soul of the universe; while ER and LE are the bones and metabolism that inevitably grow when this soul oscillates.
Driving the evolution of this system are these three most fundamental logical chess pieces [3]. We can make a brilliant analogy using biology, which also implicitly contains the supreme philosophy of Taoism: "The Tao produced One; One produced Two; Two produced Three; Three produced All things":
- Self-Reference (SR) — The "Gene" of the Universe (The Tao produced One): Self-reference is the origin of everything, the prime mover of the universe. Just as genes contain instructions for self-replication, the self-reference paradox ensures the logical system can never be at rest, thus generating eternal oscillation and evolution.
- Entity-Relation (ER) — The "Body Structure" of the Universe (One produced Two): Entities and relations weave the topological network. It does not require a pre-existing three-dimensional space; space itself is a geometric structure woven by countless ER connections.
- Lazy Evaluation (LE) — The "Life Activity" of the Universe (Two produced Three): The system does not compute everything globally and synchronously, but processes the logical conflicts generated by self-reference "on-demand". This local, asynchronous computation process manifests macroscopically as computational friction, gravity, and the flow of time.
3. Searching for God's Chess Rules (The Ultimate Razor)
Since Self-Reference, Entity-Relation, and Lazy Evaluation are three known chess pieces, how does "God" play chess with them?
Driven by the obsession with a perfect world (Occam's Razor with the fewest rules), this set of chess rules must be simple enough—there must absolutely be no artificially set constants (even a simple constant like "multiply by 3" is strictly forbidden), nor can there be any patch-like explanations.
Regarding the specific chess rules, I am not completely certain yet, but I have found two extremely elegant potential "solutions". I offer them here as a starting point, and I earnestly request and expect scientists worldwide to conduct further in-depth research on this:
3.1 Solution 1: Trinity + Interaction Combinators (Lafont Model)
The Interaction Combinators proposed by French mathematician Yves Lafont [4] were not naturally designed for cosmology, but after modification, they can perfectly adapt to the Trinity theory. In this solution, the rules are streamlined to the extreme: pure graph-theoretic geometric reorganization (erasure, annihilation, or duplication/weaving) only occurs when nodes meet face-to-face. Without any constants, simply through the encounter of SR (duplicating nodes) and ER (constructing nodes), an infinitely complex topological network can explode in the medium-free void. Preliminary code simulation experiments have confirmed that this scheme can naturally emerge high-degree fractal structures and deterministic chaos characteristics.
3.2 Solution 2: Trinity + Topological Doubling
This is another, even more back-to-basics solution. Imagine the simplest topological structure—a closed single loop. There is only one rule: stretch this loop to double its length, then twist and map it back onto itself. This minimalist self-referential mapping mathematically generates extreme topological mixing and the butterfly effect instantly, producing perfect topological chaos and fractal dust.
4. Comparison with Wolfram's Computational Universe Theory
When discussing the computational universe, Stephen Wolfram's theory must be mentioned. When my theory "The Logical Universe" was published, I only knew and loved the excellent website WolframAlpha, and was unaware of Wolfram's own grand "Computational Universe" theory [5]. Here, I express my deepest respect to this pioneer.
Compared to Wolfram's theory, my theory possesses a "tendency towards pure perfection" (except for brooding over paradoxes): * No prerequisites required: Wolfram's model still relies on pre-set update rules and discrete grid/hypergraph evolution steps. My theory requires no pre-set "things"; it is built entirely on the "void". * The core status of Self-Reference (SR): This is the greatest feature of my theory. Wolfram's system deduces forward, while my system uses the "self-reference paradox" as the sole engine of the universe. Without self-reference, there is no quantum superposition, nor the awakening of consciousness.
5. Jia Baolong's Ten Conjectures of the Universe
Based on the aforementioned medium-free computation and Trinity theory, I hereby propose ten core conjectures regarding the nature of the universe and computation:

Conjecture 1: The Multiple Model of Medium-Free Universe Superimposed with Computational Universes The universe presents a nested structure. In this model, the lowest level is the "medium-free computation universe" (pure logic) studied in this paper. Above it, "computational universes" based on physical media emerge and superimpose. The "game world universes" created by humans (if they count) are an example of a higher level in this nested model.

Conjecture 2: Is Our Universe Medium-Free, or Does It Have a Computer? Is our universe directly at the lowest medium-free state, or is it running on a "physical computer (parent universe)" emerged from the underlying logic at some level? This is an ultimate question waiting to be proven.

Conjecture 3: In a Computational Universe, Scientists Cannot Fully Understand All Machine Code (100%) If our universe is a computer, the scientists inside can never 100% parse out the underlying machine code of this computer. Because "observation" itself is a computational operation, inevitably leading to Gödel's blind spots.

Conjecture 4: In a Computational Universe, the Machine Code of the Lower Universe Cannot Be Studied Observers in the current universe can absolutely never penetrate the "virtual machine barrier" to study the machine code or hardware structure of the "lower level (parent universe)" that runs the current universe.

Conjecture 5: There is No Paradox-Free Universe A universe that is logically absolutely self-consistent and free of paradoxes does not exist. A system without self-reference paradoxes is a pool of dead water, forever unable to generate chaotic evolution and conscious life.

Conjecture 6: Absolute nothingness is inherently unstable In an absolute void devoid of any entities and relations, the inevitability of quantum fluctuations or logical self-reference causes it to be unable to maintain a stable state, inevitably generating topological structures out of nothing.

Conjecture 7: Spacetime is an emergent illusion of Entity-Relation connections and Lazy Evaluation processing The physical space and time we perceive are not the underlying background of the universe, but an illusion emerging macroscopically from the topological connections of Entity-Relation (ER) and the asynchronous processing of Lazy Evaluation (LE).

Conjecture 8: Physical constants are discrete processing limits of the logical universe Fundamental physical constants like the speed of light and Planck's constant are not arbitrary values set by God, but the ultimate bottlenecks faced by this purely logical graph network during discrete information transmission and computational processing.

Conjecture 9: Consciousness is the high-order structural projection of the universal Self-Reference engine Human consciousness is not a biological miracle, but a high-order topological projection formed in macroscopic complex networks after countless fractal iterations of the universe's most fundamental "Self-Reference (SR)" engine.

Conjecture 10: The ultimate thermodynamic heat death of the universe is asymptotically impossible Driven eternally by the self-reference paradox, the system can never reach an state of absolute equilibrium. Therefore, the ultimate heat death of the universe predicted by traditional thermodynamics is asymptotically impossible to achieve.
6. Conclusion
The universe is not "calculated" by some supercomputer; the universe itself is a purely logical "computation" process. When we trace back to the very bottom of everything, there are no strings, no branes, and no quantum foam. There are only pure logical relations, and a "self-reference paradox" that can never prove itself true.
The paradox, this logical flaw that I once brooded over, is precisely the only reason why the universe can exist, breathe, and evolve into you and me.

In English, the Trinity corresponds to the Christian Holy Trinity. In Buddhism, the Trinity corresponds to: Atman / Attachment to self (corresponding to Self-Reference), Pratītyasamutpāda / Dependent origination (corresponding to Entity-Relation), Abhisamskara / Active manifestation (corresponding to Lazy Evaluation); the medium-free computation world is exactly "Form is emptiness".
Is all of this merely a coincidence? From the unification of Taoism to Buddhism, could the legend of "Laozi converting the barbarians into Buddha" actually be true?
